A Tale Of Two Sisters Explanation:

Before start let's introduce the characters. The main character is two sisters Su-mi - Su-Yeon, their father, and their stepmother Heo Eun-Joo. The movie starts at the mental asylum where Su-mi is questioned regarding "who is she?". So by this scene, you will understand that Su-mi has identity disorder. Then the movie shows a scene where Su-mi and Su-Yeon came to a new home. But soon they enter the home their stepmother tries to taunt them. In this scene, Su-mi tries to argue with her stepmother. You will able to see Su-mi is overprotected about Su-Yeon. Then in that night, Su-Yeon feels some suspicious things, so she goes to Su-mi's room to sleep. Then in the morning, Su-mi finds that Su-Yeon having her periods. So she goes down for taking sanitary pads where stepmother tells her she also having periods. Soon Su-mi also found that she also having periods. This thing looks suspicious because three of them having periods on the same day.

Then they invite Su-mi's uncle and his wife for dinner. Where Heo Eun-Joo is trying to communicate but nobody is interested to talk to her. Suddenly Su-mi's uncle's wife gets fits. Then somehow they manage to make her comfortable. Su-mi's uncle's wife notices one girl at the down of the dining table. Then later all birds of the home are found dead. After this stepmother got angry and punishes Su-Yeon. Then Su-mi argues with her dad regarding he is not helping Su-Yeon from their stepmother. Then the father tells that Su-Yeon is died. This is the turning point of the movie which explains many things. Later in the morning stepmother tries to kill Su-Yeon. Now Su-mi tries to fight with her stepmother but she got weak in this fight. But suddenly her father arrives and he gives pills to Su-mi, requests her to stop the drama. Then in this scene, Su-mi is showed playing the character of stepmother and herself. So all activities are done by Su-mi like killing birds, trying to kill Su-Yeon where she was breaking the doll. So Su-mi was illustrating her sister and consider her self as a stepmother. Actually in the past Su-mi's mother got a disease. Then they hire Heo Eun-Joo (current stepmother) to take care of their mother. But later Su-mi's father starts loving Heo Eun-Joo. Which makes Su-mi's mother more depressed which leads to suicide. Then Su-Yeon sees her dead mother in the cupboard and tries to help her but suddenly the cupboard falls on her. Then Heo Eun-Joo sees this because of the noise but she does not help Su-Yeon, then Su-Yeon dies. Now the movie is only looks based on the physiological thrill and due to mental illness, Su-mi was doing all this. But you noticed that Su-mi's uncle's wife sees the ghost child and in the last stepmother also experiences a ghost. So actually the movie also shows the ghost of a dead mother and Su-Yeon. Who take their revenge on the stepmother. I tried my best to give a proper explanation, hope this solves your confusion about the movie.
